Creative Ways to Get Your Kids to Brush Their Teeth

April 20, 2020

Getting your children to brush — and floss — their teeth two times a day can feel like an uphill battle. But their teeth are constantly growing and developing, making routine teeth care all that more important for your children.

Today, First Hill Dental Center in Seattle is here with some creative tricks to make brushing and flossing fun for your children. Read through our suggestions. Then, don’t forget to schedule your routine teeth cleanings with your family dental care provider!

Helping Kids Brush Their Teeth

We’ve already offered ways you can get your kids to brush their teeth, but sometimes those tactics aren’t enough. That’s why we’re here with some creative ways you can re-encourage your children to brush and floss daily.

Lead by Example

As a parent, this won’t be the first time, or the last time, that you’ve heard about leading by example. But it’s important to reiterate that sentiment when it comes to oral hygiene. If your children see that brushing and flossing is important for you, it’s easier for them to prioritize that for themselves as well.

Pick Out New Toothbrushes and Toothpaste

Did your child get to pick the toothbrush and paste they use? Involve your children in the entire process and take them to the store to pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste. If they have a toothbrush they love, it’s easier to encourage them to use it two times a day. They can also choose their favorite color of toothpaste or an exciting flavor of dental floss.

Change up the Music

Children need to brush their teeth for two minutes at a time. While you might have found a song for them to listen to while they brush, that music might become ineffective. Instead, have them pick a new song every week or day so they have something different to look forward to.

Are you trying to encourage multiple children to brush their teeth? Alternate between who gets to pick the music. Or, if you want to encourage a little bit of friendly competition, give them different chores or toothbrushing goals and let the winner choose the next song!

Go Electric

Electric toothbrushes are an effective way to remove excess food particles and plaque from your teeth. Whether your children are prone to cavities or just need an extra boost for their brushing, consider buying them an electric toothbrush. This upgrade will help you ensure that their teeth are getting clean, but it can also make brushing even more fun!
